The nib is split at the end, so that when pressure is applied, that split widens and more ink goes onto the page. The G-Pen consists of a nib holder and a replaceable metal nib that is dipped in ink. There are many factors that go into matching a student to his or her ideal text. The reading levels per classroom are wide-ranging and varied. For example a book or magazine with a 770L and a reader assessed at a Lexile level of 770. The ideal for both reader and text is to match both their assessed Lexile measure. Measures below 10L are classified as BR or Beginning Reader. A text’s Lexile Framework works in increments of 10 with 10L being the lowest. The two main criteria it tests are word frequency and sentence strength. MetaMetrics © predicts and assesses how difficult a text will be for a reader to comprehend. A book or magazine at a 500L has a Lexile Level of 500. In this measure, MetaMetrics © is assessing the text’s difficulty level. After a text is assessed, it is given a measure like that of a student’s readability level, 600L for example. Anything below 5L is assessed as a BR or Beginning Reader.Ī book’s Lexile measure is analyzed by MetaMetrics ©. The reader’s Lexile Framework works in intervals of five with 5L being the lowest. The higher the Lexile measure, the higher the student’s reading level. The Lexile level will always be shown as a number with an “L” after it - for example 770L = 770 Lexile. Despite his teacher’s horrible advice, he became certified as a building contractor in 1915, a licensed Californian architect in 1921, opened his own practice, and became the first African American member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) in 1923. Yet Paul Williams persevered in the face of racism and his personal tragedies not only to successfully navigate school but also to become a well-recognized, professionally respected architect. When he did get married, his first son, Paul Revere Williams Junior, died before reaching one year of age. At Polytechnic High School, a teacher counseled him not to be an architect because no white clients would want him and there weren’t enough black clients to afford one. At this time, Los Angeles was 36 th in the nation based on population but only 3131 out of 102,000 residents (3%) were black. In 1908, he graduated with honors as the only black child in his entire elementary school. He was placed in a separate foster home from his brother, with Mr. Both his parents died of tuberculosis, his father when he was two and his mother when he was four. To begin, not only did Williams persevere in architecture in a difficult historical era for a black man, but he overcame significant personal tragedies to do so. ![]() Shockingly, Williams participated in some 3000 projects over the course of his life, and yet was awarded the AIA Gold Medal only in 2017, almost 40 years after his death. Based on his work, Williams should be better known and better represented in the standard canon of trailblazing architects. An analysis of Williams’ work reveals a sad truth about the field of architecture: not only are black architects underrepresented in their field, those black architects are not as recognized nor celebrated for their achievements compared to white contemporaries. Without question, his contributions should be more widely recognized for his influences on both architecture and interior design. How did this happen? In this paper, I will show how the work of black architect Paul Williams (1894-1980), with his extraordinary five-decade career, is far more relevant to the architectural history canon than is demonstrated by his representation within it. Paul Williams in front of the Theme Building at LAX Airport (FN US ) In fact, the one building this man IS known for, the TWA terminal at LAX, he had nothing to do with designing! Thus, the inherent differences between the letters shine through, rather than those inherent differences being muddied by haphazard variations. An even texture indicates that the visual weights of the individual letters are well-balanced. So when you set a block of text in a given typeface, that block of text should have an overall even texture. A good typeface lets those inherent differences between letters shine through, while maintaining harmony between all of the letters. ![]() If letters didn’t differ from one another, we wouldn’t be able to read them and get information from them. For example, an “x” is totally different from an “i.” That’s the very basis of letters. Each letter is inherently different from other letters. Letters do the job of conveying language. Instead, I mean the “texture” of an overall block of text set in Papyrus. I don’t mean the “texture” in the sense of the various nicks or scratches on the edges of Papyrus letters. One of the most important fundamentals by which to analyze a typeface is that of texture. Keep in mind that Papyrus is what you would call a “display” font, which means it was never intended to be used in blocks of body copy in the first place – not that that has stopped anyone from using it for their term paper on ancient Mesopotamian economics.Įven though Papyrus is a display font, seeing it set in body copy still helps us analyze how well it balances visual weight. Here I’ve set blocks of body copy in Papyrus, Garamond, and Comic Sans. So, I set out to compare and contrast the qualities of Comic Sans and Papyrus with the qualities of the most beloved typeface – Garamond. If Papyrus is the second-most hated font, next to Comic Sans, it makes sense to define Papyrus’s “bad”-ness in comparison with Comic Sans. Surprisingly, I didn’t find this to be true. If it’s so hated, clearly it must be lacking in fundamentals. To start off, let’s look at Papyrus’s fundamentals as a typeface. The surprisingly solid typographic fundamentals of Papyrus One that sends an important message about the potential downfall of civilization. I believe that James Cameron’s use of Papyrus was an artistic choice. And no, not necessarily because of any aesthetic quality the font has. The most surprising finding of all was that Papyrus could potentially be the perfect font for the film Avatar. There were things I learned about Papyrus that deepened my dislike of the font, but there were other things that helped me appreciate it. (I wish I was kidding.) I’ve edited it down to this long blog post. I spent over a year writing a novel’s worth of words trying to untangle the mess. So, I set about the arduous task of breaking down Why You Hate Papyrus. It’s another thing entirely for it to be used to represent what would become the top-grossing movie of all time. So I think it behooves us to get to the bottom of it and report it.It’s one thing for Papyrus to be used on the sign of a strip-mall bakery. This means you lose confidence in your display, and even sometimes notice real problems that you dismiss as being artifacts when they aren't. It's also disconcerting when the on-screen display doesn't match the printed product if it is off in one place, then you never know where else it will be off. I don't think anyone is concerned that it might print like this (though that'd be a pretty severe calamity!). Well, I think the reason to "worry" is primarily that it's ugly and looks bad and is hard to work in. I certainly wouldn't worry about it back in the days of OS8 and OS9 and Quark XPress, a user had to simply accept the jaggies onscreen, knowing that the output would be correct. But now I guess he just meant "the part of the software the displays the font on the screen." There may be some confusion about what is meant by "the display." When Peter wrote earlier, "Definitely looks like a problem with the display," I thought he meant either a hardware limit or a fundamental limit.
